Assuming you no longer have a Windows computer it will be difficult. Microsoft no longer has the download 'converter' available (did a Google search) probably because it won't run on newer versions of Windows. Also, apparently older MIX files won't even be readable in newer versions of MS Word.

Doing a Google search came up with some forum posts suggesting various third party software solutions, but they were all from about 5-10 years ago, and not Mac compatible.

Create your own music mix, radio advertisement, soundtrack or remix in minutes Add effects to individual tracks, including echo, reverb and distort Supports a number of file formats including multiple wav codecs, mp3, wma, vox, gsm, real audio and many more Compatible with Mac Intel OS X 10.5 or higher. This is a quick&dirty Mac OS X (10.2) port of Oyvind Hammer's wonderful old 'mix' program (originally for SGI/Irix, ported to Linux by Guenter Geiger- the version here is based on the more up-to-date Linux version).I wanted to have available a decent public domain soundfile mixing program for OS X, and I've always liked the simplicity and 'elegance' of Oyvind's app. Mac OS 8.0 introduces the most visible changes in the line-up, including the Platinum interface and a native PowerPC multithreaded Finder. Mac OS 8.1 introduces a new, more efficient file system named HFS Plus. Mac OS 8.5 is the first version of the Mac OS to require a PowerPC processor. By NCH Software MixPad is free music recording and mixing software for Mac OS X designed for easy audio production. Simply drag and drop your audio clips onto the timeline then mix music, vocal.

Someone suggested going into Finder and if the extension on the file said .jpeg.mix, rename the file and remove the mix and see if the photo would open. But apparently in the same thread, when trying just to rename .mix to .jpg corrupted the file.

Good Luck.

Also, if you do have access to a Windows machine, there is an old program called Polyview that can still be downloaded from CNet http://download.cnet.com/Polyview/3000-18488_4-10002104.html

Apparently it will even run on new machines with Windows 10 and it will batch convert the old MIX files to JPEG.

When it comes to recording and creating polished, professional, highly creative audio files, one of the most popular software that comes to mind is Mixcraft. It is able to record unlimited number of audio tracks, support of different audio file formats, tons of sound effects to choose from, professional virtual instruments, and other technical audio editing options to make your music just in for the right beat.

Beyond its glorious and well known music recording and editing features, sadly Mixcraft is only available for Windows users. Additionally, this software doesn’t come free but rather marketed in a high price tag. Beginners and music lovers with little background about sound editing will equally find Mixcraft very difficult to use. On the other hand, due to its diverse and comprehensive audio editing features, an increasing number of Apple fans are still willing to download Mixcraft for Mac. How to do it? See below.
